Hints and tips on how to strengthen your team
1. Strengthspot
Develop your colleagues further by helping them to understand their strengths use. Use this intelligence to help people work on the right things at the right time. Pay attention to energy from your team members, and what gets done and what always seems to slip. When are your colleagues most energised and engaged at work?
2. Feedback on strengths
When you observe one of your colleagues using a strength, tell them! Explain the positive impact it had on the situation in real time to encourage further use. Don’t be tempted with just saying “that’s great”.
3. Compensate for weaknesses
Help colleagues and team members overcome any business-critical weaknesses that could impact the team or the team goals. Consider how they might overcome these with their strengths or see who else in the team has this as a strength that might be able to support them.
4. Team meetings
These are a great opportunity to understand the team dynamics and reflect on how you can leverage the collective strengths. Pay attention to who will speak up verses who will need to reflect on decisions. Who is likely to take action or consider the impact?
5. Regular strengths conversations
Encourage everyone to share their learning, goals, and dreams with colleagues and managers. This could be during formal or informal conversations, but it will give people a chance to spot opportunities for others.
6. Team culture
Naturally use the language and adopt the culture of strengths wherever possible. Delegating is a great way to give colleagues an opportunity to develop unrealised strengths or to perfect their realised strengths.
